Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

I am reading this series of books currently and  believe me when I say when you read them you will love the characters and the authors’ wit and strong female lead.

It is in production in Scotland for a TV adaptation coming to the Starz channel in the near future.

Something is stopping me from reading the series quickly and I think it is because I will be saddened when I eventually finish them. Maybe I am savoring them and prolonging the inevitable?

Here I go…

Standard

Last week was a new start for me, I somehow managed to resign from a job I loved.

I have been an RN for 20 years and have always enjoyed my working life. When life throws you lemons (or dumps them on you , in this case) I chose to stay at home and make lemon curd!

The road is long and narrow

The road is long and narrow

A 10 hour journey with 3 small children aged 5 and under need not be a nightmare. My tips:

Pack snacks
Have the electronics charged and headphones at hand
Frequent stops
Lots of silly song singing
Pick out clouds and describe what they look like
Do not try to stay on your diet, road trips = Skittles and Pringles
Diapers and spare clothes within reach, not in a bag
Empty trash bag for soiled clothes, vomiting and … trash
Coffee stops for Momma and Dad (we are talking Venti)
The promise of a large glass of pinot noir at the destination! Happy trails.

Lemon Curd

Lemon Curd

Recipe:

1 1/2 cups sugar
4 eggs
3 fresh lemons (Meyer are the juiciest), squeezed
pinch of salt
1 stick unsalted butter

Method:
Cream the butter and sugar , add lemon zest if you like “bits”
Add eggs one at a time , then add the salt and the lemon juice
Cook over a low heat and keep stirring (or you might get scrambled eggs)
this will thicken in about 10 minutes. Place in clean jars and cool. Eat within 2 weeks if you can resist that long!

Tip: if it does get some cooked egg in it, do not worry, strain it into another pot, continue until thickened and it is still good !

Four kids and no job. what to do?

Standard

I am very fortunate that my husband is a hard working firefighter and paramedic and is the most patient, empathetic husband that I could have ever wished for. We have four children ranging from 18 years old and a senior in high school to a baby girl , only 17 months old. I spend my days looking after the house, kids and dogs.

Does my blog title suggest  that I am some silly, “I love my life“, stay at home mom of four , singing to the birds and smiling like a fool all day?Hell ,no. I am a potty mouthed , fun loving, wine drinking, yell at my kids one minute and hugging on them the next Scottish housewife, transplanted in Southern California.

I have loved gluing things together, painting and sewing stuff since I was a little girl and couldn’t wait until Blue Peter came on the TV after school. Sticky back plastic and ping pong balls…voila, a dolls bed that never quite looked as good as they made, or was as simple.

I have simplified my life recently and I have heard so many times, ” why not start a blog?”. I have, and so please feel free to join me on my journal type blog following my highs and lows as a stay at home mom and firefighter wife.

I make caramel that would (and has ) pulled out your crowns (sorry Hubby) and often burn my fingers on hot glue guns and spray painted the grass pink, but hey, what’s life without a few mistakes?
